Crete
Crete is the largest island of Greece and the fifth largest in the Mediterranean.
It is the island that gave birth and raised Zeus, the place where the Minoan civilization was developed, where courage and bravery came to life to an impressive degree and the land where a large number of spiritual people lived.
Crete is differentiated from the 100 Greek inhabited islands.
It has unique physical, historical and cultural particulars, due to its geographical place.
The island is situated in the centre of East Mediterranean, in equal distance from the coasts of Italy and Middle East.
It’s the point that three civilizations meet, European, Asian and Africa.
This strategical point, that consolidates the dominance of Crete in the East Mediterranean and controls the commercial streets between East and West, was the basic reason that Byzantines, Arabs, Venetians, Turks and Germans came and colonised the land for short or long periods.
Today Crete is one of the most prosperous regions of Greece. It has about 600.000 inhabitants and is separated in four prefectures: Chania, Rethymno, Heraklion and Lasithi. The island has everything to offer to its visitor, since it combines high snowy mountains, hills covered with olive trees, long sandy beaches with crystal clean waters, rich valleys and deep shady canyons. The combination of a 7-month tourist season, all year-round sunshine and mild weather, as well as the existence of stunning physical beauty and fascinating local culture, has attracted thousands European visitors that now call Crete their home.
Chania
Chania is the second largest and most beautiful and important town of Crete. It is built between the White Mountains and the Cretan Sea, in the northwest side of the island. Chania is known to be a town with living Cretan tradition but also with European character. The ancient and modern monuments, the Venetian Harbour and the Old Town, the colourful neighbourhoods, the traditional lifestyle and the friendly inhabitants who warmly invite you to join them….
All these reasons and several more makes you think that the life in Chania promises to give you unforgettable moments!
It is most poetic city of Crete and when you walk through it, you get a very pleasant taste of beauty.
Built on the ruins of ancient Kydonia, it has seen and survived many invaders, but has also tasted civilizations that left their marks on building faces, castles, walls, antiquities, monasteries and churches.
The rich architectural tradition of the town, all the monuments and its admirable position, had as a result the proclamation of the town as Town of Architecture by the Greek Ministry of Culture.
