Our office has bought and begun restoring a very old stone, historical house in Vamos Apokoronas.
About the House:
The history of the house has been estimated to have begun around 1800. Its first owners were Turks who at that time had in their possession Crete. The house was burned 109 years ago like many houses in the village during the battles between Greeks and Turks with the revolution in 1896. From this period and afterwards the house was passed into the hands of the Greeks and was inhabited until the 2nd world war. At the end of the war, the building was not used as a house and became a grocery store which operated for about 35 years. During the 1980’s due to the old age of the owner it began slowly to be deserted until it finally closed. For a short period it was used as a storage area until it was totally abandoned in 1995.
Today during 2005 it has been purchased by Exarhos Homes and its restoration has begun with the outmost respect for its history and its architecture individuality so that its character will remain unalterable. Offering its new owners the magical sensation of living in a house which carries with it a history of two centuries.
Description of the House:
The ground floor of the house consists of a large united kitchen and living room area with dimensions of 4.90 x 5.65 meters, a small hall with cupboards, bathroom with a shower and a small semi-outdoor area. Above the bathroom a spacious loft has been build to be used as storage area. The united area of the kitchen and living room contains a restored Turkish fireplace and a wooden staircase which leads to the 1st floor. The flooring of the ground level is stone made from strong stone from the local area. The walls are in some areas plastered and painted with white wash as it was common in the past and in other areas the stones are visible which remind the times of the past. The ceiling of the ground level is wooden and consists of thick cypress beams and thick boards from the local area.
The first floor as the ground floor consists of a big area with dimensions of 4.95 x 5.70 meters which is a very spacious bedroom. In this area there is also a bathroom with a shower, a reconstructed Turkish fireplace and a large wooden loft with dimensions of 4.95 x 2.50 meters which can be used as an office or a second bedroom. On the 1st floor in the front area of the house, there is a small reconstructed balcony and on the north side there is a small veranda with a beautiful view. The ceiling of the 1st floor as the flooring is wooden made from boards of local cypress wood which lean on trunks of the same wood. The roof between the wooden ceiling and tiles has been complemented with strong insulation from expiation polyester so that the room is not affected at all by the changes in weather.
The restoration of the house is estimated to be completed in May of 2005. It will then be ready to greet its new owner who will become a part of its continuing history and will lead the house into the next century.
Price of the house: 105.000 euros.
