Georgioupoli is a coastal village with approx. 800 inhabitants. The area is a popular holiday destination with thousands of visitors every year. It lies on the northwest coast of the island, in the Bay of Almiros, between Chania and Rethimno. Lush vegetation, mountains, a beautiful 6km long sandy beach and the only lake (Lake Kournas) on Crete are some of the unique characteristics of this area. It is well developed on the coast and can cater for tourism. The village has a cosmopolitan atmosphere and night life, modern hotel units with high quality services, and it provides easy access to any part of Western Crete via the motorway that connects the main towns & cities of Crete.
Sites to visit: The valley of Krapi, 15km south-west, near the village of Emprosnero. The only passage way to Madares of Sfakia. The gorge of "Nibros", 34km south-west. The gorge is 6-7 km long and it is one of the narrowest and deepest in Greece. At some places it is 2m wide and 300m deep with lush vegetation. The highway which leads to Chora Sfakia, passes through the gorge.
Lake Kournas, the only one in Crete, lies at the north-west of Kournas village. Its ancient Greek name was Corissia and there was a temple dedicated to goddess Athina "Corissia" , as Stephen Byzantios mentions. However it has been said that the name of the place comes from the arabic word "courna" which means lake. There are several villages around the lake which are called "Kournopatimata". Patima is one of them, where there is the church of Agia Irene -14th century- with ruined wall paintings. At the south of the lake, in the area of Keratide, you will find a Cave Kournas with stalactites and stalagmites. It was discovered in 1961.
