Vafes is a historical village, situated 37km from Chania at an altitude of 210m. It dates back to 700AD. Many historical battles have taken place here throughout the village's life.

A building from the Venetian times is operating today as a traditional taverna. The church of St John the Baptist has a bell tower dating back to 1581. The church of Agion Asomaton- has been declared a preservation building and recently was renovated - has religious icons from the Byzantine era.
