The village of Fres is considered to be one of the largest and more picturesque villages in the Apokoronas’ area. It is located below the White Mountains, in the north side of the province. Due to its distance from the sea – around 11km – the village has not developed as a tourist destination like other villages in the area. Its charm and picturesque surroundings remain unchanged throughout the times. Fres has the feel of an old Cretan traditional village.

In Fres, you can experience the real Cretan village lifestyle. The 420 Fres inhabitants, who work in agriculture and farming, are friendly and hospitable and will invite the ‘xenoi’ (foreigners) for a coffee or raki in the traditional “Kafeneion” (Greek cafés-bars) in the main square of the village under the centenarian plane trees.The village has grocery stores that stock traditional local produce, cafés, tavernas, a small medical centre, police station, post office, etc.

Near Fres, about 7 km away, is the village of Vamos, capital of the Apokoronas area. Vamos has a public medical centre, chemist, bank, post office, police station, and cafés, tavernas and grocery stores as well. In the tourist village of Kalives, apart from a fantastic beach, you can also find all kinds of shops and services. Kalives is only 11km away from Fres.

The village of Fres is 25km away from Chania and the main general hospital. Fres is approximately 30 km from Chania airport and 30 km from Rethimno town.
