VAMOS

Vamos is the capital of Apokoronas. It is built on the side of a green slope, at an altitude of 250 meters above the sea. The estimated 750 inhabitants of Vamos enjoy the view of the Cretan sea which stretches 12 km south of the village. But also the White Mountains which rise imposingly on the north side making it very beautiful in contrast with the green scenery of the area and the red roofs of the houses.

Vamos has a long history which through the passage of centuries reaches our days. Its history was even more intense during the period of the Turkish occupation and especially in the years 1866 and 1896. The events that took place in the village played an important role in the battle for the Cretans liberation from the Turks.

In 1896, due to the conflicts between the Turks and the rebels of the area, the village caught fire and was completely burned. The events of these years were the main reason for a general revolution assembly of the Cretans in Vamos with the aim of escalating the revolution for liberation of the entire island.

Today Vamos wins the hearts of its visitors from the first moment they walk and wonder the alleys and the cobbled streets of the old village with its enchanting beauty and traditional buildings. In the traditional tavernas of the village you can taste food cooked in wood ovens with authentic Cretan recipes and buy handmade local products from restored variety stores or stay in guest rooms in the beautifully restored buildings of the village.

In the new part of the village you can find services such as: bank, post office, doctor’s surgery, health center, chemist, dentist, variety stores, gas stations, taxis etc.
